Together with Karl, we will explore the essential nature of ordinary consciousness as enlightened wisdom. To experience our wisdom, we do not discard our mundane consciousnesses but learn to see them for what they are and work with them in a skillful way. Through fully understanding our confused mind, we gain access to its flip side, our buddha mind. To help practitioners with this process, the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje, composed
Distinguishing Consciousness from Wisdom. A foundation for the practice of Mahamudra, the text describes the mahayana view of the 8 kinds of consciousnesses and how they transform into 5 wisdoms: dharmadhatu wisdom, mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, discriminating wisdom, and all-accomplishing wisdom. Even as ordinary beings, we can experience glimpses of this five-fold radiance of our mind.
Khenpo Karl Brunnholzl began his career as a medical doctor. He went on to study Tibetology, Buddhology, and Sanskrit at Hamburg University, then Tibetan philosophy, practice, and language at the Marpa Institute under the direction of Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche. Karl is translator and author of many books, including The Center of the Sunlit Sky, Straight From the Heart, In Praise of Dharmadhatu, Gone Beyond, Luminous Heart and Heart Attack Sutra (forthcoming). He was appointed by Ponlop Rinpoche to be a Mitra (senior teacher) within Nalandabodhi, and recently was given the title of Khenpo—awarded
in the Tibetan tradition after completing a long period of study.
